An atelier with
a sound obsession.

We started Velvet because most acoustic treatment looked like industrial equipment. We believed sound performance and considered design were not in conflict — they should be the same object.

Our story

From recording studio
to salon.

Velvet was founded in 2019 by an acoustic engineer and a textile designer who had collaborated on a high-end recording studio. The acoustic panels they specified worked beautifully — and looked like they belonged in a server room.

So they started over. They kept the engineering — the same dense fibrous core, the same membrane construction — and they reimagined the surface. Hand-tensioned velvet. Considered colour. The kind of finish a furniture maker would sign.

Today the atelier produces every panel in a small workshop in Nottinghamshire. Every piece is checked, signed and packed by the team who made it.

What we believe

Three principles.

Performance as proof

If a panel doesn't measurably reduce reverberation, it's a wall hanging. Every Velvet product is tested per EN ISO 354 — and we publish the curve.

Made by hand

No factory line. Every panel is upholstered by a master craftsperson, who tensions the velvet, shapes the corners, and signs the reverse.

Quietly sustainable

70% post-consumer recycled PET fibre in our cores. Solid-wood frames from FSC sources. Velvet from European mills with full supply-chain disclosure.

Inside the atelier

The making, up close.

Each Velvet panel passes through the hands of a master upholsterer. We don't outsource the parts that matter.

The core
Recycled-PET acoustic substrate, the heart of every panel.
The stretch
Hand-tensioned velvet over a solid wood frame.
The stitch
Tonal thread, French-piped edges, set by hand.
The palette
European mill velvets, archived and labeled by hand.
A maker's word

"You can't fake the tension. The hand knows."

Velvet is a difficult fabric. Pull it too hard and you crush the pile. Too loose and the panel reads as cheap. The only way to learn is twenty thousand panels — which is roughly what our senior upholsterers have under their hands.

— Mathias, lead upholsterer, with the atelier since 2019

Our craft

How a panel
is born.

01

Cut & layer

The acoustic core is cut to size. Mineral wool inner band is laminated. Membrane stretched.

02

Frame

Solid pine frame is jointed and squared. Concealed mounting hardware is fitted to the reverse.

03

Upholster

Velvet is hand-tensioned across the front, wrapped, and stitched at the corners by a master upholsterer.

04

Sign & ship

Each panel is checked, the maker signs the reverse, and it's packed in protective fabric for shipping.
